Truly extraordinary. I lived in a grass hut in Costa Rica for 6 months but I had a dandy little stream running right nearby. But 6 months as a single 22 year old is nothing like what you have undertaken. I built this cabin on top of a mountain with no road, no water, no electricity over a period of 9 years while I lived 1700 miles away but again, that is nothing like what you've done.
In the earlier part of your post, with all the fragmented, out of body type feeling swirling all around you, I think you were and are shedding many generations of "civilization" and the insidious toxicity of all that we have constructed around us. You are probably metamorphosing into a much earlier version of yourself, from 4-5,000 years ago. I don't think mankind has evolved, they have devolved into what we are now. Ps- sending more $$. Remind me how to do it. Wes
Oh. I did hear “sweet girl. gentle with yourself. Humanity has trekked for thousands of years away from the connection and immersion with nature… You may feel like a baby crawling but you’ll be walking again and running once more. Thousands of years walking away.. will take some time to come back into my arms. Grace as you learn.”
OH friend. what an amazing story you have. I see you have a deep sense of what it is to take a pilgrimage in a very different direction than most. It’s an undertaking that I don’t think anything can prepare you for…
It did feel like a long process of old parts shedding and dying off. Those old programs running of judgement, feeling helpless, consumption, ideas of needs and comforts, so many things. layer by layer. Being here and seeing the profound need to use my body to work, create my world, and see with new eyes has been so valuable. Looking back, I wouldn’t have changed it. Thank you for wanting to support our life and work here.
Here is our paypal link with a humongous hug of gratitude:
Your story is a fascinating one, and has made me appreciate ordinary, taken-for-granted things more than ever - things such as a bed, a toilet, a shower, a radio. I may never see then as less than miracles from now on.
Thanks for coming along for the windy and fascinating ride. I'm so glad to shine light on the "normal" day-to-day things that so many take for granted. The crazy thing for us is to see how many people globally (in the billions) have lived without them up until this generation. What is required to have all of those most basic things? extraction of raw materials, processing, design, people digging holes, education to make it happen, maintenance, more labor, production of parts, distribution of materials, large scale global supply to the far reaches of the world. So many things unseen that we are uncovering and discovering. what are the costs? What are the benefits? And truly, yes! The bed, the running water, the radio are all incredible modern day miracles! Enjoy them! be grateful! Yay!
The great sin, as I see it, is excessive consumerism, which leads of course to incredible waste. Even here in Ireland, one million tonnes of food is wasted annually. Can you imagine all the cows, sheep, lambs etc that are slaughtered unnecessarily to make up part of that?
The modern world is a long way now from the wisdom of the American Natives who killed only what they needed in order to feed themselves, then prayed over the slaughtered animal (usually buffalo) thanking it for feeding them.
I see this too. I think as we start to see what matters most- see it with fresh eyes. We can make our way back to investing in what is most important. We share this beautiful spaceship and all of it's incredible resources. I'm hopeful that in small ways we can have that wonder and gratitude that will take us back to something simpler. Little by little backwards may be a nice start.
Thanks friend. The strength of the guys in my life held things together while I fell apart and then was able to find it too. Just posted the wonderful parts :)
haha. I wish I had grown up amish to know. I was in a little town but very much had a suburban easy lifestyle surrounded by amish community. Eric was mennonite roots and far more prepared than I. Then spent 12 years in the corporate grind getting most meals delivered to my desk and a condo with a post office where i one-clicked most of my shopping needs. My only preparation was the slight inconvenience of walking in my andean village for 9 years and having the clock turn back, meaning you had to pay internet in a line at the shop once a month...all before we moved to the jungle. I don't know where the fortitude came from... I was driven by my values to create something more connected and slower. but i never knew it would take me as far as i went into the extremes of off grid in a developing nation. (i'm only seeing this comment now for some reason! I so appreciate that you wrote. )
Thanks for sharing your journey with us Megan. Life with young boys is a spin cycle so I can’t imagine it without a few conveniences, like water! I’m glad things are smoothing out and look forward to reading more.
Thank you for taking the time to read and hang out with me :). Water yes! I’ve never been more grateful for every person who has ever installed a pipe, designed a system and brings it to homes. When our water went on. I stood by the tap in awe. we can just turn a handle and boom. fresh clean water. Glad things are smoothing out too. Thanks again and big hug.
These challenges are incredible Megan, made more do by the fact you have such a young family to care for. I have huge respect for all you are doing. Thank you for sharing the reality. ❤️
thank you friend. definitely felt all the feels through the last few years. Despair, anger, frustration, unbelievable rage and disgust (with myself, with the world, with the bugs). but when I could remember to lift my eyes I could see so much more. OOHHH and a hummingbird just flew right past my head. so that helps. ✨🌿 ✨
Oh that does help! I’ve never seen one! I just don’t know how I’d deal with the bugs. That would be the greatest challenge as I ready to insect bites and they become infected. How do you deal with that?
Phew. this one is kinda crazy. I meditated to understand the biting bugs (because I was losing my mind) I found this out: they are natures acupuncture. They go towards are biggest blockages and pull out the inflammation through the skin. Then they make you itch to break up the density underneath. As you work out the density underneath and release the toxins, the bugs bite way way less and you stop getting inflamed.
They go after the carbon dioxide and heat (the exact thing that releases from blocked points- because there is an overload). I now use them in my body work‚ If i see people have bites in certain patterns (and it is always in certain patterns) I work on those bites. They bite in lines along the meridians where inflammation is trying to flow out. I started noticing emotional and energetic patterns. When people had anxiety, were in a bad mood, or had gone through traumas that hadn’t been fully processed bugs would create clouds around them.
Bugs are natures way of healing us. Any time people from the city come into the jungle- because they carry a certain charge (speed, stress, tightness) the bug attack them. It took about a year to figure this out and then another year to learn from my body how to release… Now I rarely get bitten… and when I do they go heal really fast. I used to be the person that got bitten nonstop and they’d swell and get infected too.
Don’t get me wrong, they SUCK. I fully understand how bad the burning, itching and losing one’s mind is with bugs. But I asked spirit to show me. and it really is miraculous.
Oh and in practical terms- I wear super light weight long sleeves and have some natural citronella bug repellent. I also grow bug repelling plants. and got a sulfer witchhazel cream that brings the sting down, increases cell regeneration. Because I still dont LIKE getting bit.
This is such an amazing story, I mean just wow. What a huge change in lifestyle . I hear you though, when there is a calling to do something, it's almost impossible to let it go. You just have to run with it and trust where it takes you
I love that you know the power of a call. Yes, you run. <3 although there were moments I felt a little dragged with some kicking and screaming too. hehe. Loe that you are here with us through this. Thank you for your kind words, encouragement and commenting here.
Oh yes, sold my house, gave up my job, travelled, left a few jobs actually, kicking and screaming all in favour of the calling. I'm sure it will have a deep purpose in the future, that's if you are not aware of that already ✨💫✨

Sometimes we need to fall apart to make way for the new version of us.
Seems like the stark simplicity of your shared Amish roots have given you the fortitude to survive and figure it all out.

Yes definitely
