In this insightful article Megan walks us through trigger moments for panic attacks and how to use simple but effective tools to reduce or prevent their debilitating grip on the daily lives of those who suffer from them, so that real healing can occur.
She says that this real healing involves tuning in to the body, sitting with memories that are held in its cells and allowing them to flush what they’ve been holding, and she calls this important process ‘the cleanse”.
There is a lot of very useful information here, and this article should be read in full, then re-read, because it is obviously coming from one who knows her topic well and is eager to share what she knows. Thank you, Megan.
“That doesn’t feel like failure to me. It feels like evidence that healing is possible and I’ve come a long long way. “ Thank you for this. I recently had major reversion and I have to remember that it is cyclical.
Gosh that is so brave you to share. I’m so proud of you truly. I know that moment of thinkin- I’m back here and then go into shame. But when i zoomed out was like wait. I’m Not where I was. I almost didn’t share that i had some trigger moments because of shame too. But man. I’m working through holding that layer and I’m truly so grateful you commented. We’ve been through hard things and we are doing the works to care for ourselves which is so powerful. You are powerful and you don’t walk alone
Thank you. 🙏 it seems there is a cardboard cut out myth that the spiritual path is linear and that we reach some sort of enlightenment and that is it. But I am a biological being and my life still moves in circles. This most recent circle was in a new place where I have never been so it makes sense that the old stories try to run themselves. They did a really good job and I had a pretty miserable week with myself and was not very good company to myself or anyone else. And then I sat with myself yesterday and my writing practice and asked myself questions. And so I move along with new intentions. With the understanding that it is a process. Most important part I find is to give myself credit. The hardest part is to tell myself. Oh I should have been over that already. But I amand not at the same time. But the self mothering practice and inner child work allows me to work through it with a love and grace, and even when I spiral into shame without knowing it, I am there for myself to hold it.
Round and round up and up. I see the spiral and the cycle too. Thank god we have the tools to move through those tough patches. Holding you in love with all of it. Yes. Giving credit to yourself. Yes coming back home again and again. Yes grace through it
Not just any discomfort. The first tool is for the big ones. 5-10 minute pause when there is a spin out happening and checking into the basic needs. Creating space to take care if oneself is the main goal I think.
I found it interesting that you started with HALT as that is one of the first things we tell newcomers in the rooms of recovery. Letting your self wallow in one of those four states makes changing difficult and can quickly lead to relapse!
Totally, its almost always step one. Amazing that its that first thing because so much can be stopped before the damage and the following spiral. Basic needs. basic grounding for the body. The rest of the layers help really uncover what the deeper needs are. deep safety to feel held and seen. thanks so much for taking time to comment!
I was just thinking about this tonight... that it so interesting that this tool is really found so many times once people have bottomed out or hit the dark night of the soul... i'd love for it to be mainstream and known for those early signs-- i find a lot of people still don't know about .
I truly believe that, if basic human needs represented by the term HALT were fulfilled, we would have a better world. The need for food, peacefulness, companionship, and rest are shared by all of humanity and the world would be a much better place if those needs were met.

Thankyou Megan for this. It's very useful. I will buy you a coffee…that's all I can afford at the moment! 💝🌼
that is incredibly kind of you! Thank you so much and i’m really glad you found it useful!
So, the main tool is to drop everything and start taking care of yourself as soon as you experience any discomfort? That's not always possible...

Great post!
